Basic Background and Headcanon
Feb. 18th, 2013 08:08 pm*- (Headcanon) Born into the Estraneo, and was put into the experiments pretty much at birth; he has no knowledge of who his parents were besides that they were part of the Famiglia.
*- (Headcanon/canon-inferred) There's a few references via the Hell rings and a couple other things to powerful Mist users getting powers outside the ordinary by dealing with the supernatural; they were basically trying to cut out the middleman. Among other experiments, he was repeatedly killed and revived, with the intent of him bringing back whatever power existed outside of the realm of the living. They sort-of succeeded, in that it ended up breaking barriers between his "present human self" and other incarnations of "other selves" in other realms. This likely led to oddities even before the massacre - which was Path of Heaven, the deva.
*- (Headcanon) There had been some attempts at training/molding to further lay foundations as "living weapon".
*- (Canon side material) One of the useful bits from the light novel/what translations I've found is that there was a gap between them escaping and the thing with Lancia's family - probably not long judging by Mukuro's age in Lancia's flashbacks. By Ken's narration, there'd actually been a period where the other two weren't sure of Mukuro, and an incident where they'd been hungry/starving and he'd left without a word; they were questioning if he'd abandoned them when he came back with an armful of apples - he hadn't said anything about what he was doing, just slipped off to go prooobably steal food.
*- (Headcanon) It took a few years for the Paths to stabilize; after the escape but before things'd gone stable, he'd have fits of "acting weird" because of jagging into a different Path, with the personality bleedover of being something nonhuman and maybe fragmented memories.
*- (Headcanon) The "mute" thing he'd had when he was with the Estraneo was something that only gradually went away; probably the first three or four years, if there wasn't something Path-related jagging him more talkative, he was more likely to just act and only really spoke if it was needed/there wasn't another way to accomplish what he was trying to do.
*- (This is a question for Amanda/Ruth to ping on) - the other two having been around Lancia's family, just a bit separated for the time they were there?
(Headcanon) Basically my estimate of Mukuro's issue there was that he was both on the "All Mafia = the Estraneo" vendetta, and a little in Frankenstein Principle lashing out; Lancia managed to not trip any of his twinges, while the rest of the Family was either too "helpful" ("...They're being too nice where's the other shoe they want something/are up to something") or, well, too Mafia in the sense of "yes, some of them can be dangerous" where he parsed it the same.
*- (Half-lines in canon expanded, "time and time again he's driven the Mafia into desperate situations") After Lancia's family he'd gone full blown "war on the underworld"; he'd kept Lancia on a pretty short leash, and pretty much went hunting other Mafia Families as he found where their homes/bases/etc. were. For a good while they weren't exactly well coordinated attacks - he's a Mist user, but he was like, an 8-12 year old mist user - which possibly meant more damage in some respects (Esp. early on there was likely collateral damage in the form of "everyone in this place dies" that likely included some civilians/servants/family members, and striking randomly/as he found things meant they really wouldn't have an idea if they were being targeted or when they needed to defend/run), and less in others (While they may've wiped out a couple smaller Families, they likely just took chunks out of the more visible operations of others).
*- (Phrasing of something Reborn said about them in prison and the jailbreak) Up until the arrests, they hadn't targeted law enforcement - there may've been some incidental deaths/injuries (undercover agents that were unlucky, others that tried to interfere/get in the way during an attack). That first prison wasn't a Mafia-run one - the people he picked up weren't organized-crime sorts, and Reborn's phrasing is that after the jailbreak Mukuro started targeting law enforcement and military as well... meaning that some law enforcement got involved in the mass murders of organized crime and something went FUBAR/there may've been some desperate Mafia people helping with the arrest, Lancia and the other two got caught, and in the jailbreak Mukuro's targeting widened to include legal authorities as well as the underworld.
*- On that note, as a group the Kokuyo gang before arrest probably has a pretty impressive body count to their credit. It's possible that any mafia involvement in them getting a legal arrest wasn't even so much a case of corruption as a case of both parties keysmashing at the death toll and getting desperate.
*- (Headcanon) Given the apparent scale/role of the Vongola as a larger organization, they've tangled with/probably taken out some Vongola agents, operatives, and members, and may've been chased by the same before.
